How to be sure you are choosing the right industrial shelving and storage system
It is essential that you choose the correct storage system and pallet racks, as the wrong system can be disastrous for your business. This excess cost will show in both wasted time and lost profits.
Your system must be right first time. Victor provides a full range of high capacity shelving – and our industrial shelving solutions and heavy duty racks are perfect for all industrial and warehouse applications.

A table explaining the performance of different racking options can be found at the bottom of this page.
I need to be able to be able to access each individual pallet and to pick from any level
with a variety of different fork trucks.
My stock comes in varying heights.
Wide Aisle Selective Pallet Racking
This is the most popular option of all racking types. This high capacity shelving option offers fully adjustable beam levels to suit varying pallet heights. There is 100% accessibility to pallets – and aisle widths are designed to allow a conventional fork lift to turn at right angles and deposit or remove a full pallet from the racking.
I need the best space utilization both in height and floor area…
Whilst still retaining the ability to access every individual pallet together with pallet height adjustability.
Narrow Aisle Racking
This solution offers a racking system that retains the flexibility of 100% selectivity, adjustable beam heights with greatly increased capacity due to a significant reduction in aisle width (eg: aisle width could go down from 4 mtrs to 1.5 mtrs).
The only consideration with this system is it requires special stacking trucks to place and remove pallets. These ‘Narrow Aisle Trucks’ can be more expensive than the standard ‘Cantilever’ fork lift. This option is often used for manual picking with ‘Man Up’ trucks, popular for document storage.
I need to be able to store more pallets without extending the building.
Victor Double Deep Selective Racking
This configuration is the best value option to significantly increase you storage capacity. It simply uses standard selective racking with another row placed immediately in front, so you usually end up with racking 4 deep, 2 rows accessed from each side with a special reach truck or pantograph fork attachment.
These trucks are not expensive, and are a small price to pay for what could be as much as a 50% increase in storage capacity.
I have a lot of identical pallets to store.
As a safety issue I cannot block stack, but I need to get as many pallets as possible into a given area without using specialist equipment.
This system is ideal for large volumes of like product when first in last out (FILO) is not an issue. Although slower in throughput, drive-in racking offers very high density storage. This highly space efficient storage is particularly suited to cool room or freezer store environments. Another popular application is where a manufacturer may have production batches which typically come and go as a whole batch.
This is a good value system that works out very cost effective when compared to selective racking on a $ per pallet space basis.
This system can be serviced with a conventional forklift provided its width is small enough to fit inside the ‘Lane’, Generally speaking any modern forklift of up to 2 – 2.5 ton capacity will be within size.
My stock is always changing.
It is smaller items that are not palletized and it is a reasonable weight.
I need to be able to access each individual item and to pick from each shelf.
Space Shelf is standard Victor racking posts with a smaller profile rebated beam that takes an MDF board or wire mesh shelf. Depending on the shelf depth front to back it may need shelf supports to prevent the MDF from sagging under load.
Space Shelf can be used with MDF board or wire mesh. Wire mesh is proving very popular now as it complies with fire safety regulations if and when a sprinkler system is installed. It enables storage of small items and can also carry pallets if needed.
As the beams are interchangeable, often it is configured with space shelf beams at the lower ‘picking face’ level with pallet racking beams at the higher levels for bulk storage.
My stock is always changing.
It is medium to light weight and needs to be stored on a shelf.
(Equivalent to the original Series 80
Long Span Shelving)
Victor Novaspan is like a smaller version of pallet racking. It has similar looking posts that are 60mm wide and are adjustable in 50mm increments. This system uses a ‘Z’ section rebated beam that hides the edge of the board; it looks tidy and is often used in a wholesale/retail situation.
Novaspan comes in a wide range of sizes, is extremely good value, it is quick and easy to assemble or adjust (frames are supplied pre-assembled). It is also available in a high density mobile compactor configuration if space is at a premium.
I require a hand picking operation for documents or small parts…
I have run out of floor space and I can’t extend my building.
Raised Storage Areas
This offers an industrial storage solution where frames support not only the shelving but also the walkway for pedestrian access. Goods can be loaded on or retrieved from the higher levels by means of fork-lift trucks. Walkways can have timber decks or steel mesh. The advantage of mesh decks are for fire safety and it obviously lets the light through
Note: If you are considering a raised storage area it would pay for you to check with local authorities as raised storage areas can be subject to council consents and fire reports.
I have a lot of long items that I need to store.
These items are unable to be stored in normal selective racking because of the length.
This racking solution has adjustable arms that are cantilevered out from a column/frame which allows for a long length to be stored along the length of it. These can be single sided for against a wall or double sided units accessible from either side.
Victor Industries have a range of cantilever systems starting with a low cost light duty system, right through to a very substantial heavy duty cantilever rack.
